Wedding bouquet

TL;DR – Not all songs are created equal.

I attended a wedding recently when the couple chose Bruno Mars’s Marry You as their march-in song – now, I love Bruno and I love my friends but their choice of song was seriously questionable to me. Not because it’s already quite outdated (hello, it was released in 2010!) but because the lyrics beyond the title sounds pretty much like what you DON’T want your marriage to be about:

If we wake up and you wanna break up that’s cool
No, I won’t blame you
It was fun girl

Very fun to divorce meh?

So anyway, here are some other popular ‘wedding songs’ that you really shouldn’t be playing at your wedding:

1) Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve

Yeah, the dramatic orchestral moments sound good but the lyrics actually say “Cause it’s a bittersweet symphony, this life, try to make ends meet, you’re a slave to money then you die.”

2) I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston

Cause this song is actually about a breakup.

3) Every Breath You Take by The Police

This is only slightly worse than a breakup I guess? After all, it’s just about a crazy boyfriend stalking his ex-girlfriend.

4) The Blower’s Daughter by Damien Rice

We all know he says “I can’t take my mind off you…” but that is “Til I find somebody new.”

5) Lady in Red by Chris De Burgh

Cause your wife most probably won’t be in red.

6) When A Man Loves A Woman by Percy Sledge & Michael Bolton

“When a man loves a woman…she can bring him such misery. If she’s playing him for a fool, he’s the last to know”… sounds a little unhealthy, no?

7) Sometimes When We Touch by Dan Hill

This very intense song as described by Hill himself is actually about, “All I knew was there was this woman that I was falling desperately in love with, and I just thought everybody was naturally monogamous. My parents have always stayed together. Well, this woman didn’t want anything to do with monogamy. She wanted to get close to me, so to speak, but she wanted to be close with a lot of other guys at the same time, and I found this to be terribly distressful. She also liked to tell me about how all the other guys were so much more rich than I was, older, more established, she was going out with athletes, Argonauts (players from the Toronto football team), famous photographers. So I felt very inadequate.”

Erm, okay.

8) Love Story by Taylor Swift

Now, who can’t resist a little Taytay? But, this is a song fundamentally about her parents objecting to their marriage.

9) First Love by Utada Hikaru

When it comes to foreign songs, I highly recommend that you pick the song if and only if you thoroughly understand the lyrics. First Love, for example, is about the singer still missing her well, first love… even if she falls in love with someone else in the future. Good.

Now that DOTS and other K-dramas are so the rage these days, again, I highly recommend you pick the song not just for its melody.

10) Gold Digger by Kanye West

Well, I hope there’s a pre-nup.
