The complete guide to Lo Hei-ing like a pro

By January 26, 2017Current

TL;DR – Do it now, do it good.

If you haven’t already started on the Chinese New Year ritual of Yu Sheng or Lo Hei, then the good news is, it’ll definitely start soon!

For those doing it at home, you might want to take your lo hei skills to pro level with this How-To guide.

Your family will be impressed 😉

Step 1:

On the bed of shredded vegetables, add in the raw fish while saying “Nian Nian You Yu” 年年有馀.

Translation: (May you) have abundance year after year.

Step 2:

Add the pomelo or squeeze the lime/ kumquat/ whatever citrusy fruit and go “Da Ji Da Li” 大吉大利.

Translation: Good luck and great prosperity!

Step 3:

Sprinkle the cinnamon powder and pepper (usually in the red and green sachets) and say “Zhao Cai Jin Bao” 招财进宝.

Translation: Wealth and success – this is very important for business lo hei sessions. Or if you want to win the $2.2 million Hong Bao Draw.

Step 4:

Pour the oil with “Cai Yuan Guang Jin” 财源广进.

Translation: More fortune! More wealth! Yup, again. Come on, we are Chinese. What did you expect?

Step 5:

Add peanuts with “Jin yin man wu” 金银满屋.

Translation: Literally, may your house be filled with gold and silver.

Step 6:

Cover the entire dish with the deep-fried crackers (my favourite!) and shout “Bian Di Huang Jin” 遍地黄金.

Translation: Not only do you want your house to be filled with gold, you want all the floors to be covered with gold too.

JUST KIDDING! Let’s continue…

Step 7:

In goes the plum sauce (by the way, the prosperity yu sheng by Sun Ray cafe featured in the pic above does look pretty fancy) and accompany it with “Tian Tian Mi Mi” 甜甜蜜蜜.

Translation: Sweetness abound – this is good for couples and relationships.

Step 8:

Toss everything together and be sure to shout “Huat Ah!!!!” at least a good 7 times.

Happy new year, guys!
