Minister Shanmugam angry over Facebook user’s “sick post” about deceased police officer

By June 3, 2017Current

TL;DR – Sigh.

Singapore saw the loss last week of Staff Sergeant Nadzrie Matin who had died in an accident while performing his duties as a traffic police outrider.

He was hailed ‘a true son of Singapore’ by Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam and on Facebook, some had changed their Facebook profile photos to display a horizontal blue stripe across a black-and-white Singapore flag or black background in tribute.

While this is an extremely sad event, what’s sadder is how anyone can gloat about Staff Sergeant Nadzrie’s death.

Facebook user Thomas Poh Heng Chua took it to the social media platform to write about how it’s “good lah” Officer Nadzrie died because he had once issued him a ticket.

As best expressed by Minister Shanmugam, this is an insult to all police officers, and deeply offensive to Nadzrie’s family.

Here’s what Minister Shanmugam’s post says,

Thomas Chua’s sick post on Police Officer Nadzrie Matin

I was deeply upset and angry about a gloating post that one Thomas Chua has made on Police Officer Nadzrie’s death. Nadzrie died while on duty.

Thomas was gloating about Nadzrie’s death, because Nazdrie had given him a ticket!

People like Thomas are sick in the head. No decency or any sense of right and wrong.

What is a TP officer to do when someone breaks the law? It is because of officers like Nadzrie that the rest of us have safety and security.

Thomas’s comments are an insult to all police officers, and deeply offensive to Nadzrie’s family .

You wonder what human decency people like Thomas have – to be so self-centred, smug and making nasty remarks about an officer who died doing his duty. While there is a completely distraught wife, grieving parents and family, and teammates who are crying.
