TL;DR – Absolutely yummy!
So the wife and I were in Bali. We stayed in Jimbaran. And we were quite fortunate to find some really yummy food.
Amazing grilled seafood at Warung Mami Ikan Bakar
We wanted seafood. So we googled and somehow, this came up. When we got there, we were a bit apprehensive. It looked rather dingy, even a bit… dirty.
But we decided to take a leap of faith. And we were so glad we did. The place serves grilled fish, prawns and clams. For the fish, you can usually choose from grouper, red snapper, and white snapper. There may be other types of fish, depending on the catch. There’s also kang kong. And of course, you can have rice. They will also provide different types of sambal, chilli, sweet soy sauce, as well as fried garlic slices.
The fish is grilled to perfection – crispy on the outside, succulent, tender and juicy on the inside. The prawns and clams are coated with an amazing sauce – slightly sweet, slightly spicy, slightly salty. They use coconut husks to grill their seafood, which infuses the seafood with a very interesting flavour. You know what’s the best part? The food is very affordable. For about IDR70,000 to IDR 100,000 (i.e. SGD7 to SGD10) per person, you can get a very satisfying meal of wonderful grilled seafood.
One thing to note. This place opens at 1pm. You want to get there early to get the best choices of fish. But… that’s when they also start the fire, so it can get quite smoky.

Great babi guling at Warung Karya Rebo
One of the iconic food of Bali is babi guling. Someone recommended that one of the best places in Bali to get babi guling is from Warung Karya Rebo.
For about IDR50,000 (i.e. SGD5), you get a sumptuous meal – a sliver of very crispy roast pork skin, succulent and juicy slices of pork, crunchy pork fat, yummy pork sate, and tasty stir-fried vegetables. It also comes with a bowl of very flavourful pork and winter melon (we think it’s winter melon) soup. It’s a super hearty meal.

Super spicy babi goreng sambal matah at Warung Cahaya
If you love spicy food, you will love the babi goreng sambal matah at Warung Cahaya.
So sambal matah apparently is a mixture of sliced shallots, lime juice, lemon grass, coconut oil (we think), and LOTS of cut little red chilli padi. Don’t be deceived by its look. It’s SUPER potent. But goes really well with the pork that is well marinated and perfectly deep fried diced pork. The set, together with the vegetable, is about IDR40,000 (i.e. about SGD4). They also sell other small snacks like chicken sate and krupuk (i.e. keropok), which go really well with the set.
One thing to note about the place. Similar to Warung Mami Ikan Bakar, Warung Cahaya is quite a small place. And no air-con. So it can get quite crowded and hot. You want to go early. Because the babi goreng sambal matah get sold out quite soon (a testament to how good it is).

Fantastic tapas with Asian twist at Cuca
Ok. This one is a bit different from the rest. It’s a proper atas restaurant. Unlike the others, it’s pricey, even by Singaporean standards. And it’s not Indonesian food. It’s sort of ang moh food. Cuca serves tapas (all the tapas are meant to be shared amongst everyone at the table) with an Asian twist. And it’s… it’s… really… really.. really… fantastic.
It comes on a warm plate. Crispy on the outside, yet juicy on the inside. The country coleslaw isn’t like any coleslaw I’ve had. It’s refreshingly sour and makes the fried chicken feel less heavy.
If you love cheese and corn (like the corny and cheesy me… hur hur hur), you would love this dish. The grilled baby corn is coated with young parmesan. The slight spiciness was a nice touch.
Very delicately balanced flavour. Popped rice added a nice crunchy texture to the risotto. A lot of squid hidden in the risotto. Yummy!
And my personal favourite:
Bbq octopus with caramelised cauliflower and Asian gazpacho. Gazpacho isn’t your usual gazpacho. Slightly sour, with a slight hint of spiciness. Very amazing together with the caramelised cauliflower that has a nutty flavour. Octopus was barbecued to perfection. The thin slices of green apple provides a very refreshing lift to the entire dish.
The service at Cuca is really good. With every dish, they’ll explain a little bit about the dish and the best way to enjoy the dish. And the ambience is great. If you want to sit outside in the huge open grassy area, they’ll provide you with insect repellent to spray.
Four tapas was enough for the two of us. With drinks, it came up to about IDR700,000 (about SGD70).

We got to all those places using Grab. Even getting to Warung Cahaya, which is in the Legian area and nearer to Seminyak, took only about 20 to 30 minutes by Grab (depending on traffic). The other three places above are very accessible if you are in the Jimbaran area.
