TL;DR – Buy only what you need.

Following the temporary closure of Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre, supermarket operators have taken to their Facebook page to assure customers that there are sufficient stocks of fruits and vegetables in store, reminding them to buy only what they need.

The closure came after the wholesale centre was identified as a cluster by the Ministry of Health (MOH) on Sunday night and is expected to disrupt the supply of fruit and vegetables as the centre handles about 30 per cent of Singapore’s fruit imports and 50 per cent of vegetable imports, said the Singapore Food Agency (SFA).

Sufficient stocks of fruits and vegetables in store

In response to the closure, NTUC FairPrice said in a Facebook post on Sunday night that to cater to an anticipated increase in demand, the supermarket chain has increased the supply of fruit and vegetables to its stores islandwide.

Dear Singaporeans, there is NO NEED to rush to the supermarket, says NTUC FairPrice

The supermarket chain also added that its “robust and diverse supply lines for fruits and vegetables remain intact”, while reminding customers to “only buy what they need”.

Seah Kian Peng, group chief executive officer of NTUC Enterprise and FairPrice Group also took to his Facebook post to reiterate that the supermarket chain is not affected by the closure as the supermarket gets supplies directly and has its own fresh food distribution centre.

In a Facebook post on Sunday night, supermarket operator Sheng Shiong Group wrote that it is “working hard to ensure that all our stores remain well stocked with timely deliveries of fresh vegetables and fruits”.

Similarly, Cold Storage Singapore and Giant Singapore, which are both run by the DFI Retail Group, have also taken to their respective Facebook posts to assure customers that the closure of Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre has a “minimal impact” on them.

“Our stores are well stocked as we work with a diversified supplier base, with all our team members working hard to ensure sufficient supply across our stores,” both supermarkets said, also reminding customers to only buy what they need.
